A city named for gardens
Garden City takes its name from the gardens Chinese immigrants farmed there, and its main road carries the same story: Chinden Boulevard is a blend of "China" and "garden." Expo Idaho, home of the Western Idaho Fair, is an unincorporated Ada County enclave inside city limits. In recent decades the city has also become a haven for artists' studios.
Building near the river
Ground near the Boise River tends to be silty sand and gravel, sometimes with groundwater close to the surface. That changes the conversation: footings and deeper excavations can hit water, and a slab base on loose river sand needs good compaction. Ask the contractor what they have found on nearby jobs and how they will handle drainage. For footings, Boise-area frost depth is 24 inches; confirm Garden City's own rules.
Tight access and compact jobs
On a narrow lot, or a backyard reached through a side gate, a concrete truck that can't reach the forms means a pump or wheelbarrows, which adds to the price. Typical jobs here are compact: a patio with a pergola, a driveway replacement, a parking pad, steps or repair on aging slabs.
Permits
Public streets in Garden City belong to the Ada County Highway District, so approach changes go through ACHD's Driveway Approach Request and a right-of-way permit, with the work done by a permit holder licensed and bonded for it. Building permits come from the City of Garden City; we did not verify its specific thresholds for walls or raised patios.
