Replace or repair?
A driveway with a couple of stable cracks or one sunken panel is a repair or leveling job. Replacement starts to make sense when many panels are cracked through, the surface has scaled across most of the slab, pieces are loose, or sections heave and settle season after season. If the base is the problem, patching the top won't hold.
What a replacement includes
- Saw-cutting a clean edge where the new slab meets anything staying (garage slab, sidewalk, approach).
- Breaking out and hauling off the old concrete or asphalt.
- Digging to the planned depth, which may mean breaking caliche, and fixing soft spots.
- Placing and compacting new base.
- Forming, pouring, finishing and cutting joints, then curing.
Ask whether tear-out, haul-off and disposal are on the quote as their own lines. National cost guides put removal at about $2 to $6 per square foot, with thick or reinforced slabs at the high end. See concrete removal.
Widening while you're at it
Replacement is the cheapest moment to change the shape. In Boise, zoning limits driveways in the front setback to 20 feet wide in many residential districts, with uncovered parking in front capped at 20 feet or half the façade width, whichever is less, and the homeowner guide says driveways need Planning and Zoning approval. Ask the city before you design a wider slab. A wider driveway may also mean a wider curb cut, which is ACHD's decision in Ada County.
The approach and the sidewalk
If the approach or public sidewalk is broken too, that work is in the right-of-way. In Ada County it goes through ACHD: a Driveway Approach Request for changes to the approach, a right-of-way permit, and a permit holder licensed and bonded for that work. In Canyon County, check with the city or highway district.
Cost
We found no reliable single national figure for a full replacement, so add the parts: tear-out at about $2 to $6 per square foot plus a new plain driveway at about $6 to $12 per square foot, national installed ranges. A 500 square foot driveway works out to roughly $1,000 to $3,000 for removal plus $3,000 to $6,000 for the new slab, before approach work or upgrades. Local quotes set the actual number. See concrete driveways for thickness, mix and joints.
