A town the river moved
Middleton was named for its position midway between Old Fort Boise and Keeney's Ferry. It got a post office in 1866 and a water-powered grist mill in 1871. Then, in 1872, the Boise River flooded and cut a new channel that left the town on an island; it relocated after 1880. That history is a reminder that river-bottom ground here moves water around. Lots near the river can have shallow groundwater and loose sandy soils that need careful base prep.
What gets poured in Middleton
State Highway 44 runs through town to I-84 at exit 25, three miles west, and Star is six miles east. Along that corridor, new homes ask for patios, walkways and curbing; acreage lots ask for shop slabs and RV pads and long driveways. For larger outbuildings, footings go to frost depth (24 inches in Boise; confirm locally); see concrete foundations.
Permits
Middleton is in Canyon County, outside ACHD. Right-of-way work goes through the City of Middleton on city streets or through the Canyon County highway district that owns the road. Building permit thresholds for walls, raised patios and outbuildings are set by the city or county. We did not verify Middleton's specific rules; ask before work starts.
